YPP CANDIDATE CHUKWUMA ACCUSES SOLUDO OF DICTATORSHIP OVER LAWMAKER’S SUSPENSION
The governorship candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in Anambra State, Sir Paul Chukwuma, has strongly criticized the suspension of Hon. Bernard Udemezue, the lawmaker representing Ayamelum State Constituency, describing it as a clear sign of dictatorship under Governor Charles Soludo.
Hon. Udemezue was suspended on Tuesday during plenary following the recommendation of the House of Assembly’s Ethics and Privileges Committee.
In a statement on Wednesday, Chukwuma accused the Soludo-led administration of stifling democracy in the state.
“Anambra State under Governor Charles Soludo has slipped into dictatorship. This suspension is only a symptom of a deeper problem the polity has been plunged into by its current chief executive,” Chukwuma said.
He alleged that the House of Assembly has lost its independence, claiming lawmakers are now unable to freely debate, hold the governor accountable, or raise motions on critical issues, particularly security.
According to Chukwuma, Soludo has empowered local militia groups such as Akaodo and Agunechemba, whom he accused of unleashing mayhem on residents while enjoying the protection of the government.
He further noted that despite rising insecurity in Anambra, the House has remained silent, even failing to address the kidnapping of a sitting member, the late Hon. Justice Azuka.
“The legislature in Anambra State has collapsed,” he added, warning that silencing representatives and overlooking insecurity signals a dangerous slide into authoritarianism.
Chukwuma’s remarks have stirred heated debate among political watchers, with many calling for transparency and accountability in how the state’s democratic institutions are being run.
