YOLA FLOOD: ADAMAWA GOVT REPLIES ATIKU, SAYS IT ACTED SWIFTLY
The Adamawa State Government has responded to criticisms from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and others over its handling of the recent flood disaster in Yola, which claimed five lives and left several people injured.
The devastating flood hit parts of Yola South Local Government Area on Sunday, leaving many homes damaged and residents displaced. Following the tragedy, Atiku and some citizens accused the state government of being unprepared and slow to act.
But in a statement released by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri’s Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, the government firmly denied the allegations.
“We strongly reject any claims that the Fintiri administration ignored the plight of the people,” the statement read.
The government highlighted efforts already made to tackle flooding in the state, including the construction of stormwater drains and improved water channels to reduce flood risks.
It also said the Deputy Governor, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta, promptly mobilised emergency agencies, including the marine police, to help rescue operations and support affected communities.
In addition, the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA) was deployed immediately to deliver relief materials and assist displaced families.
The government reassured residents that it remains committed to protecting lives and property, and is continuing work to improve flood response and infrastructure in vulnerable areas.
