YOBE UNIVERSITY LECTURERS INSIST STRIKE WILL CONTINUE UNTIL ALL DEMANDS ARE MET
Lecturers at Yobe State University, under the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), have vowed to continue their ongoing strike until all their demands are fully addressed by the state government.
The strike, which began on July 11, 2025, remains active, according to a statement issued on Monday by the ASUU Yobe chapter chairman, Ahmed Karage.
While the union acknowledged that the government has implemented the ₦70,000 minimum wage as of July 2025, it insisted that other pressing issues have been left unresolved.
According to the statement, the lecturers are demanding:
Full implementation of staff promotions as approved by the university council
Payment of promotion arrears from 2018 to 2025
Settlement of arrears for the new minimum wage from 2019 to mid-2025
Unpaid 35–25% salary awards for academic staff from 2023 to 2025
Payment of the outstanding ₦70,000 minimum wage arrears for January 2024 to June 2025
Karage emphasized that the strike would only end when a formal agreement is signed between the union and the state government. He appealed to the public for patience and understanding, assuring that academic activities will resume once all the issues are resolved.
“Our stand is not to punish students or the public,” he said. “We simply want what is fair and due to us.”
