Makurdi — Leaders of the Yelewata community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State have appealed to the state government to urgently construct 100 two-bedroom housing units to provide shelter for residents displaced by the June 13, 2025, attack.

The tragic incident, which claimed the lives of over 200 people—including women and children—was carried out by armed herdsmen who stormed the community, leaving destruction in their wake. Several homes, market stalls, and other vital infrastructure were razed.

Addressing the media in Yelewata on Thursday, community spokesman Matthew Mnyan, accompanied by elders, women, and youth representatives, said the situation for survivors has become dire.

“We have endured extreme hardship,” Mnyan lamented. “In one day, we lost more than 200 of our people. Our homes were destroyed, our market wiped out, and families scattered. Now is the time to rebuild and restore our community.”

He urged the Benue State Government to utilize the financial contributions received after the attack for concrete rebuilding efforts.

“We are calling on the state government to channel the donated funds into constructing at least 100 two-bedroom flats to house displaced families,” he said. “Reconstructing our market is also essential for restoring economic life and helping our people get back on their feet.”

Additionally, the community requested financial support to enable victims to start small businesses and called for the establishment of a mobile police station to strengthen security and prevent future attacks.

“Reviving our market is not just important—it is critical,” Mnyan stressed. “Without it, economic life in Yelewata cannot resume. Security is another top concern. A mobile police unit stationed here will reassure our people and help restore confidence. These measures are key to bringing families back home and rebuilding our lives.”

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
