XENOPHOBIA: 268 NIGERIAN RETURNEES ARRIVE IN LAGOS FROM SOUTH AFRICA
A total of 268 Nigerians have arrived in Lagos from South Africa following concerns linked to xenophobic attacks and growing safety challenges faced by some foreign nationals in the country.
The returnees were received by government officials and relevant agencies upon arrival, with arrangements made to provide immediate assistance and support as they begin the process of reintegration.
According to officials, the evacuation was part of ongoing efforts to protect Nigerian citizens abroad and respond to situations that may threaten their safety and well-being.
Many of the returnees reportedly cited insecurity, discrimination, and economic difficulties as factors influencing their decision to return home.
Government agencies assured the returnees that measures are being put in place to support their resettlement, including access to welfare services and reintegration programmes where available.
The development has once again drawn attention to the recurring issue of xenophobic violence in South Africa, where foreign nationals have periodically faced attacks, harassment, and destruction of property.
Stakeholders have called for stronger diplomatic engagement between both countries to address the root causes of xenophobia and improve the protection of migrants and foreign residents.
While many of the returnees expressed relief at being back home, some also spoke of the challenges of rebuilding their lives after leaving behind businesses, jobs, and personal belongings.
Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to monitoring the welfare of Nigerians abroad and responding swiftly whenever their safety is at risk.
