The World Bank’s latest Container Port Performance Index has affirmed the positive impact of ongoing reforms at Apapa and Tincan Island ports, with both facilities recording significant improvements in efficiency and service delivery.

The report, released on Friday, ranked Apapa Port higher in key performance indicators including vessel turnaround time, cargo dwell time, and overall operational efficiency. Tincan Island Port also showed notable progress, moving up several positions in the global ranking compared to previous assessments.

Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Gboyega Oyetola, described the development as a validation of the Federal Government’s commitment to modernising port operations. “The improved World Bank ranking is a clear testament to the success of our reforms. We have worked diligently to address bottlenecks, enhance infrastructure, and improve stakeholder collaboration,” Oyetola stated.

Key reforms implemented at the ports include the deployment of advanced cargo tracking systems, electronic documentation processes, improved road access, and stronger enforcement against corrupt practices. The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and terminal operators have also invested in equipment modernisation and staff training.

NPA Managing Director, Mr. Abubakar Dantsoho, expressed satisfaction with the results. “This ranking reflects the hard work and dedication of all port stakeholders. We will continue to build on this momentum to make Apapa and Tincan world-class ports,” he said.

Shipping companies and importers welcomed the development, noting that reduced turnaround times have lowered demurrage costs and improved supply chain reliability. The President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), Mrs. Nneka Okafor, called for sustained reforms to further enhance competitiveness.

The World Bank report is expected to boost investor confidence and attract more shipping lines to Nigerian ports. Stakeholders, however, urged continued investment in deeper drafts, rail connectivity, and digitalisation to maintain the upward trajectory.

As Nigeria seeks to position itself as a regional maritime hub, the improved performance of Apapa and Tincan ports is seen as a critical step towards achieving that goal.
