WORLD BANK NAMES MATHEW VERGHIS AS NEW COUNTRY DIRECTOR FOR NIGERIA
The World Bank has appointed Mathew Verghis as its new Country Director for Nigeria, with his tenure officially starting on July 1, 2025. Verghis succeeds Dr. Ndiame Diop, who has moved on to take up a new role within the global institution.
In a statement released by the World Bank, Verghis was described as an Indian national with over two decades of experience in economic policy and development. Since joining the World Bank in 1999, he has held several senior positions across Africa, East Asia, Europe, and Central Asia. Until his latest appointment, he served as Regional Practice Director for Prosperity in the South Asia Region, based in Washington, D.C.
Speaking on his new role, Verghis said, “I am honored to take on this role and to work alongside the government and people of Nigeria. This is a critical moment in Nigeria’s development journey. There is real potential for transformative growth that can improve lives, create jobs, and expand opportunities for all. I’m also excited to experience firsthand the rich culture and incredible energy of Nigeria.”
As Country Director, Verghis will lead the World Bank’s operations in Nigeria, overseeing various development programmes aimed at boosting economic growth, reducing poverty, and building resilience. His responsibilities will also include strengthening partnerships with Nigerian government agencies, civil society groups, and other development partners to drive shared development goals.
Verghis holds both an M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Notre Dame in the United States. He is well published, with numerous works focusing on economic growth, fiscal policy, labour markets, and poverty reduction.
With his extensive experience and a fresh perspective, many observers hope Verghis’s leadership will help accelerate Nigeria’s development agenda and open new doors for inclusive growth across the country.
