‘WIZKID IS MY PADI’ – YENI KUTI REACTS TO CLASH WITH SEUN [VIDEO]
Yeni Kuti, the first child of the late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has finally broken her silence on Wizkid’s online clash with her brother, Seun Kuti.
The feud began last week when Seun Kuti criticized Wizkid’s fanbase, popularly known as Wizkid FC, for comparing the singer’s legacy and influence to that of their late father. The disagreement escalated over several days, reaching a peak when Seun challenged Wizkid to prove his loyalty to his fans by standing up to him.
In response, Wizkid controversially declared, “I’m bigger than your father,” daring Seun Kuti to do his worst. The comment sparked widespread debate online, with some blaming Seun for provoking the singer, while others—including members of Fela Kuti’s family—criticized Wizkid for showing disrespect to the Afrobeat legend. The incident ignited discussions among Nigerian celebrities and fans about the legacies of both Wizkid and Fela Kuti.
Amid the controversy, Yeni Kuti spoke out during an appearance on the ‘Your View’ program on TVC on Thursday. She said she chose not to involve herself in the dispute, emphasizing her close friendship and affection for Wizkid.
“Wizkid is my padi now,” Yeni said. “When two giants fight, it’s the grass that suffers. I refuse to get involved in the insults because I love Wizkid a lot. He’s been a friend for a long time. I remember when he started at the Shrine as a backup singer during Felabration, so there’s no way I could dislike him. I wish he had stopped the feud earlier, but he didn’t. Let’s mend fences—we are one people. We’re about to celebrate our icon at the Grammy Awards, and this isn’t helping anyone. It’s not just Fela or his family you are affecting; it’s all of Nigeria.”
Yeni also stressed the importance of respecting Fela Kuti’s enduring legacy. “Fela has been gone for 27 years, and yet his greatness continues to be remembered. Whichever way you look at it, he’s an icon, and there’s no need to attack him. Let those who are alive handle their differences and leave the man who has done his part in peace.”
