WIKE ORDERS DEMOLITION OF HOUSES BUILT ON WATERWAYS AFTER FCT FLOODING

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has ordered the demolition of houses and other structures built on waterways following flooding in parts of Abuja.

Wike said the directive was necessary to address obstructions that prevent the free flow of water and contribute to flooding in communities across the FCT.

The minister directed relevant authorities to identify buildings and structures constructed on waterways and take appropriate action against them.

He stressed that development on drainage channels and other designated waterways poses serious risks to residents and can worsen the impact of heavy rainfall.

The directive follows flooding recorded in parts of the capital, which affected residents and raised concerns about drainage systems and development in flood-prone areas.

Urban planning experts said uncontrolled construction on waterways can restrict natural drainage routes and increase the likelihood of flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.

They urged the FCT Administration to combine demolition exercises with improved drainage infrastructure and proper urban planning.

Stakeholders also called for stricter enforcement of building regulations to prevent new structures from being constructed on waterways.

They said authorities should ensure that residents are adequately informed about areas designated as waterways and flood channels before taking enforcement action.

Environmental experts noted that clearing drainage channels, maintaining waterways, and improving waste management would also help reduce flooding risks.

Wike said the FCT Administration would continue to take measures to protect residents and prevent developments that threaten public safety.

He directed relevant agencies to intensify monitoring and enforcement to ensure that waterways remain free from illegal structures.

The minister said the government would prioritise measures aimed at improving drainage and reducing the impact of flooding across the Federal Capital Territory.
