WIKE DENIES RIFT WITH MILITARY AFTER ABUJA CONFRONTATION, SAYS HIS WORDS WERE MISQUOTED

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has refuted claims that he is at loggerheads with the Nigerian military following a heated altercation with a naval officer earlier in the week.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Thursday, Wike dismissed the reports as “false, mischievous, and unfounded,” stressing that he has nothing but respect for the Armed Forces and the sacrifices they make for Nigeria’s security.

The controversy began on Tuesday when Wike and his entourage were prevented by soldiers from accessing a parcel of land in the Gaduwa district of Abuja. The confrontation quickly escalated, drawing national attention and sparking debates on the legality of the land development and the conduct of the security personnel involved.

However, Wike clarified that his remarks during the incident were taken out of context.

According to him, he was merely insisting that no officer or individual should execute an illegal order, emphasizing that every security operative has the right to refuse unlawful instructions. He maintained that this position does not amount to disrespect for the military.

“Let me make it clear: I do not have any problem with the military and will never have,” Wike said. “I have great respect for the institution and for the sacrifices they make to keep our nation safe.”

The FCT Minister noted that his administration continues to work closely with the military, providing support for their operations both within Abuja and across the country. He described any narrative suggesting hostility between him and the military as baseless.

“As FCT Minister, I have continued to provide support to the military in their operations. Anyone saying otherwise is simply not telling the truth,” he added.

Wike also used the opportunity to call on journalists to uphold professionalism and accuracy in their reporting. He cautioned against sensational headlines and the deliberate misquoting of statements, urging the media to contribute to national development through responsible journalism.

“I want journalists to always verify facts and report accurately. Do not cut or misquote statements to suit headlines. Let us focus on what builds our country,” he said.

The recent confrontation is expected to be reviewed by relevant authorities, but Wike’s position remains firm: respect for the military, insistence on lawful conduct, and commitment to transparency in governance.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
