“WHY MANY CELEBRITIES GO BROKE IN NIGERIA” – RAPPER M.I EXPLAINS

Nigerian rap legend Jude Abaga, popularly known as M.I, has shared honest insights on why many people — including celebrities — end up broke while trying to keep up appearances.

Speaking during an interview with media personality Chude, the award-winning rapper said he had to train himself mentally to withstand “broke shaming,” a common societal pressure in Nigeria where people judge others based on the material things they own.

M.I explained that the fear of being looked down on often pushes individuals, especially celebrities, into a lifestyle they cannot afford.

According to him, “In Nigeria, people tend to broke shame others. I had to decide whether to let that affect me or not. If you’re not comfortable with the thought that someone may mock you for driving a car they think is ‘below your level,’ then you will keep trying to live up to their expectations. That’s how people go broke — trying to impress others.”

He stressed that many Nigerians are overly concerned about public perception in a country where, statistically, the majority struggle financially. M.I added that he took his time to build a mindset strong enough to handle criticism without feeling pressured to live extravagantly.

He also pointed out that wealth can be temporary, noting that “Most celebrities who were flying private jets 20 years ago are no longer living that lifestyle today.”

M.I’s message serves as a reminder that staying true to one’s financial reality is more important than trying to meet unrealistic expectations set by society.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
