“WHY I STEPPED BACK FROM POLITICS — GOODLUCK JONATHAN FINALLY SPEAKS”

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has explained why he stepped away from active politics, revealing that his role in the West African Elders Forum (WAEF) requires strict non-partisanship.

Jonathan made this known on Thursday in Abuja during an event marking the 10th anniversary of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF). The ceremony, themed “Legacy of Impact, Celebrating Our Journey,” also included a gala dinner in honour of his 68th birthday.

Why Jonathan Stepped Back

Addressing associates who have wondered about his political silence, Jonathan said membership in the WAEF comes with a clear rule:

A member must no longer be an active politician.

He explained that the forum is made up of former heads of state who deploy preventive diplomacy across West Africa—intervening during election periods to avert crises before they escalate.

“The idea is not just to observe elections,” he said. “We step in when we see signs of trouble, to prevent issues from snowballing into a full crisis.”

Jonathan stated that many of his political allies expect him to return fully to politics, but doing so would require him to resign from the forum.

Jonathan Laments Rascality in Nigerian Politics

Speaking on the state of the nation, the former president condemned what he called “political rascality,” lamenting that anyone can jump into politics without preparation or training.

“We must change the face of politics,” he said. “It should be a business for responsible people, not rascals playing motor-park politics.”

On Kebbi School Kidnapping

Jonathan expressed sorrow over the kidnapping of about 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi State, saying the incident brought painful memories of the Chibok girls’ abduction during his administration.

He offered condolences to families affected by the latest attack, including the family of a vice principal who was killed.

How the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Began

Recalling how the GJF was founded after his 2015 election loss, Jonathan revealed that billionaire businessman Tony Elumelu encouraged him to start a foundation.

While Jonathan considered areas like education and poverty alleviation, advisers recommended focusing on democracy—an area where he already held global credibility due to his reforms of the electoral commission and his historic concession in 2015.

Thus, the Foundation was built on strengthening democracy, governance, and peace across Africa.

GJF’s Impact in 10 Years

GJF Executive Director Ann Iyonu highlighted the Foundation’s achievements over the last decade, including:

Strengthening democratic institutions across Africa

Election mediation and observation missions

Annual Democracy Dialogue (launched in 2021)

Peace-building and support for inclusive governance

Preventing violent extremism

Improving trust between citizens and state institutions

Expanding Africa’s global presence via international partnerships

She noted that the Foundation has transformed “bold ideas into transformative action” through dedicated initiatives.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
