President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has explained his decision to approve major reforms in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme, saying the changes are aimed at making the programme more impactful, relevant, and beneficial to both corps members and the nation.

In a statement issued by the Presidency, Tinubu emphasised that extending the orientation period and cancelling the passing-out parade would allow for deeper training in leadership, entrepreneurship, and civic responsibility. “The NYSC remains a vital tool for national unity and youth development. We must continuously adapt it to meet contemporary challenges and opportunities,” the President said.

The reforms, approved by the Federal Executive Council, are expected to strengthen the scheme’s capacity to produce well-rounded graduates ready to contribute meaningfully to national development. Tinubu assured that the government would provide necessary resources to ensure smooth implementation.

The decision has generated varied reactions, with some stakeholders applauding the focus on substance while others called for broader consultation. The President urged all parties to support the reforms for the overall good of Nigerian youth and the country.
