Who Won Lagos in 2023? Obi Won the Presidential Vote, Sanwo-Olu Won Governorship

Who won Lagos in the 2023 elections? The answer depends on which election you mean.

Peter Obi of the Labour Party won the presidential vote in Lagos State, while Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress won the governorship election.

In the presidential election held on February 25, Obi received 582,454 votes, finishing ahead of APC candidate Bola Tinubu, who secured 572,606 votes. Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party came third with 75,750 votes.

Obi’s winning margin over Tinubu was 9,848 votes. The result attracted national attention because Tinubu, a former Lagos governor, had a strong political base in the state.

However, winning the presidential vote in Lagos did not mean Obi won the presidency. Presidential results are counted across the country, and INEC declared Tinubu the overall winner of the national election.

The Lagos governorship election produced a different outcome.

At the March 18 poll, incumbent governor Sanwo-Olu secured 762,134 votes to win a second term. Labour Party candidate Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour finished second with 312,329 votes, while the PDP’s Abdul-Azeez Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, received 62,449 votes.

The two contests explain why different names come up when people discuss who “won Lagos.” Obi finished first in the state’s presidential contest, while Sanwo-Olu won the election to govern Lagos.
