WHATSAPP TO END SUPPORT FOR SOME OLDER PHONES BY MAY 2025
WhatsApp, the globally popular messaging app owned by Meta, has announced that it will cease support for certain older smartphones starting in May 2025. This decision is part of WhatsApp's ongoing efforts to keep the app secure, efficient, and compatible with the latest technologies.
What Users Need to Know
The move will affect users who have smartphones running outdated operating systems, with the app no longer supporting devices that can’t be upgraded to newer software versions. This change is intended to ensure the app functions securely and reliably on more modern devices.
WhatsApp has explained that this step is necessary for maintaining high performance and security across its user base, which includes over two billion active users worldwide, including a significant number of Nigerians.
iPhones Affected
Users of iPhones released in 2013 and 2014 will no longer be able to use WhatsApp after May 2025. The affected models are:
iPhone 5s
iPhone 6
iPhone 6 Plus
These phones are unable to update to iOS versions that will continue to be supported by WhatsApp.
Android Phones Affected
On the Android side, WhatsApp will stop working on devices that cannot update to Android 5.0 Lollipop or higher. Some of the affected Android models include:
Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014
HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V
WhatsApp states that phasing out support for older phones is essential for maintaining security and ensuring the app works properly on newer devices. The company clarified that this is a routine update, made to enhance the overall experience for its users.
“We continuously update WhatsApp to make sure it runs securely and effectively on the latest devices,” said WhatsApp in a statement.
WhatsApp recommends that affected users upgrade to newer smartphones that support the latest operating system versions. Without upgrading, they will lose access to WhatsApp’s features and services once support ends in May 2025.
