The Congress of University Academics (CONUA) has dissociated itself from the ongoing strike action declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), stressing that it remains committed to sustaining academic stability in Nigerian universities.

In a statement issued by its National President, Dr. Niyi Sunmonu, the union described as false and misleading the reports circulating on social media suggesting that CONUA had joined the industrial action.

“CONUA wishes to categorically clarify that it has not declared any strike action and is not part of any ongoing strike,”
Sunmonu stated.

He explained that CONUA had no reason to embark on strike, noting that the union had previously protested its exclusion from the 2009 Agreement renegotiation committee, which was later addressed by the Ministry of Education.

Sunmonu recalled that following the union’s meeting with the Minister of Education on September 11, 2025, the Yayale Ahmed Renegotiation Committee was expanded to include all academic unions, including CONUA.

He added that after holding nationwide congresses between September 18 and 24, members unanimously resolved against any strike, opting instead for constructive engagement with government stakeholders.

The CONUA president urged members to continue discharging their academic and administrative duties diligently, while calling on Vice Chancellors to ensure the safety of CONUA members in all institutions.

He further appealed to students to stay focused on their studies, assuring them of the union’s commitment to quality education, national development, and peaceful industrial relations.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
