Former Sokoto State Governor and Senator representing Sokoto North, Aliyu Wamakko, has urged Nigerians to promote peace, unity and mutual understanding as the country marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.

Wamakko made the call in a goodwill message issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Bashar Abubakar.

The senator congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad and said the anniversary provided an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by the country’s founding fathers and others who contributed to national development.

He urged citizens to renew their commitment to building a peaceful and prosperous country despite ethnic, religious, regional and political differences.

Wamakko said Nigeria’s diversity and the resilience of its people remained important strengths in addressing the challenges facing the country.

He also called on Nigerians to embrace tolerance, peaceful coexistence, mutual respect and understanding, stressing that national development was a shared responsibility.

The former governor commended members of the Armed Forces and other security agencies for their contributions to protecting the country and maintaining peace.

He also urged residents of Sokoto State and his senatorial district to uphold values associated with peaceful coexistence and concern for the welfare of others.

Wamakko said Nigerians should continue working together to build a united country that serves the interests of its citizens.
