Global payments giant Visa has reported detecting nearly $1 billion in potential scam activity across its network in the past year, highlighting the growing sophistication of fraudsters targeting consumers and businesses.

The company’s latest security report revealed a sharp rise in attempts involving identity theft, phishing, and account takeover schemes. Visa’s advanced fraud detection systems helped prevent a significant portion of these losses, protecting customers from financial harm.

Visa Chief Risk Officer, Mr. Paul Vixie, emphasised the importance of continuous investment in artificial intelligence and machine learning to stay ahead of criminals. “Fraudsters are constantly evolving. Our responsibility is to protect the ecosystem through innovation and collaboration,” he said.

The report also called for greater consumer awareness and stronger public-private partnerships to combat digital fraud. Visa has intensified its education campaigns and worked with regulators worldwide to strengthen anti-fraud frameworks.

The findings underscore the ongoing battle between financial institutions and cybercriminals in an increasingly digital economy.
