UZODIMMA CALLS FOR IMPARTIAL POLICING AHEAD OF 2027 ELECTIONS
Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has urged the Nigeria Police Force to maintain professionalism, neutrality and impartiality as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections. He made the call during the sixth Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers, CARSPO 2026, held at the Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu International Convention Centre in Owerri. Uzodimma said public confidence in the police would depend significantly on the ability of officers to carry out their duties fairly and professionally.
The governor stressed the importance of ensuring that citizens are able to exercise their civic responsibilities without fear or intimidation during the electoral process. He said the police should strengthen intelligence-led operations, improve information management and make greater use of digital technology to address emerging security challenges. He also called for stronger coordination among security agencies, particularly in the identification and management of potential threats before, during and after elections.
Uzodimma also advocated decentralised policing, including the establishment of State Police, as part of efforts to improve security across the country. However, he said any such arrangement would require adequate safeguards to prevent security institutions from being used for political purposes. His position came amid broader discussions at the conference on how policing structures and operational strategies can be strengthened to provide effective security during the 2027 elections.
The governor commended Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu for what he described as efforts to transform the Nigeria Police Force and improve its response to security challenges. He said modern policing required greater reliance on intelligence, technology, effective communication and cooperation between law-enforcement agencies and communities. He added that security personnel must remain focused on protecting citizens and maintaining public order rather than becoming involved in partisan political activities.
Uzodimma assured security agencies of the continued support of the Imo State Government, particularly in the areas of logistics, personnel welfare and other operational requirements needed to maintain peace across the state. The three-day CARSPO 2026 conference, which runs from September 21 to 23, is focused on developing a roadmap for effective management of security during elections. The Inspector-General of Police has also directed commanders to prioritise neutrality, accountability and preparedness, while identifying electoral flashpoints and strengthening early-warning mechanisms ahead of the 2027 polls.
