US TROOP WITHDRAWAL: EXPERTS URGE STRONGER SECURITY ARCHITECTURE

As the United States prepares to withdraw its troops from certain parts of Africa, security experts have called on the Nigerian government and regional bodies to strengthen the country’s security architecture to fill potential gaps.

The experts, speaking at a policy roundtable, emphasised the need for enhanced local capacity, improved intelligence sharing, and better coordination among security agencies. “The US withdrawal presents both challenges and opportunities for Africa to take ownership of its security,” one analyst noted.

They recommended increased investment in technology, training, and community-based security initiatives to maintain stability. The discussions also highlighted the importance of addressing root causes of insecurity such as poverty, unemployment, and governance deficits.

The call comes amid ongoing concerns over the impact of foreign troop drawdowns on counter-terrorism efforts in the region.

Stakeholders urged the government to prioritise comprehensive security sector reform to ensure long-term peace and stability.
