The United States has expressed support for Nigeria’s planned acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters as part of ongoing security cooperation between both countries.

The US Mission in Nigeria disclosed this in a statement on its official X account on Tuesday, saying the planned acquisition would help strengthen Nigeria’s defence capabilities and address current and emerging security threats.

The Mission said the United States valued its continued security partnership with Nigeria in promoting peace, security and stability in the region.

The proposed helicopter acquisition is part of a wider defence partnership between Nigeria and the US, which has included military equipment, training and programmes aimed at improving Nigeria’s ability to tackle terrorism and other security challenges.

In April 2022, the US State Department approved a possible Foreign Military Sale of 12 AH-1Z helicopters and related equipment to Nigeria at an estimated cost of $997m.

The proposed package included 28 T700-GE-401C engines, 2,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System guidance sections, logistics support and training.

The US said the proposed sale was intended to strengthen Nigeria’s ability to contribute to shared security objectives, promote regional stability and improve interoperability with the US and other Western partners.

The helicopter deal followed an earlier US military sale to Nigeria involving 12 A-29 Super Tucano aircraft, approved in 2017 at a cost of $497m.

According to the US State Department, Nigeria made its first payment for the 12 AH-1Z helicopters in August 2023.
