The United States Government has congratulated Nigeria on its 66th Independence Anniversary and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening relations between both countries.

The US Department of State issued the message on Thursday, saying it valued its relationship with Nigeria and appreciated the substantive dialogue between the two countries over the past year.

The department described Nigeria as Africa’s largest democracy and one of the continent’s largest economies, noting the country’s role in promoting regional stability and economic growth.

It said the United States was committed to working with Nigeria towards shared objectives and continued progress.

According to the statement, both countries share priorities around democratic principles, religious freedom, commercial relations, peace and security.

The US Government also expressed hope for continued peace, unity and prosperity in Nigeria.

The message comes as Nigeria marks 66 years of independence from British colonial rule.

The US and Nigeria have continued to maintain cooperation in areas including trade, investment, security, health, education and cultural exchange.

In July, the US Mission in Nigeria also reaffirmed its commitment to deepening trade, investment, security and cultural relations between both countries.

The US Department of State said it looked forward to continued engagement with Nigeria on issues of mutual interest and wished Nigerians peace, unity, prosperity and hope for the future.
