US COAST GUARD LIFTS 12-YEAR RESTRICTION ON NIGERIAN SHIPS
The United States Coast Guard has lifted a 12-year entry restriction that affected certain ships travelling from Nigeria to the United States.
The restriction had been in place for more than a decade as part of measures connected to concerns over maritime safety and security.
The decision to lift the restriction is being seen as a positive development for Nigeria’s maritime industry and its international shipping operations.
With the restriction removed, eligible ships from Nigeria can now have improved access to US ports, provided they continue to meet the required safety and security standards.
The move could also strengthen trade and shipping activities between Nigeria and the United States.
For Nigerian businesses involved in international trade, easier access to US ports could help reduce some of the challenges associated with shipping goods internationally.
The development also reflects improvements in Nigeria’s maritime regulatory and security efforts, which have been important in meeting international standards.
However, lifting the restriction does not mean Nigerian ships are automatically exempt from US maritime requirements. Vessels must still comply with applicable safety, security and inspection rules.
For Nigeria’s maritime sector, the decision represents an important step forward after more than a decade of restrictions.
