US CLOSES ABUJA EMBASSY OVER PROTEST FEARS, RESCHEDULES APPOINTMENTS
The United States Mission Nigeria has announced the temporary closure of its embassy in Abuja for routine business, citing potential protests in the Federal Capital Territory.
In a notice shared on Thursday, the Mission said the embassy would remain closed until Monday, March 9, 2026. It added that visa appointments scheduled for March 4 and 5, as well as American Citizen Services (ACS) appointments for March 5, had been rescheduled. Applicants were advised to check their email or AVITS accounts for new dates and contact the Visa Navigator platform if they did not receive updated information.
The development follows security concerns over planned demonstrations in Abuja linked to tensions surrounding the reported conflict involving Iran. Security agencies were said to have increased deployment across the capital amid fears of protests by members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN).
The IMN reportedly described the planned demonstrations as peaceful expressions of solidarity with Iran following reports of the death of its Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, in airstrikes allegedly carried out by the United States and Israel.
The US Mission urged the public to monitor its official website and social media platforms for further updates.
