The United States and China have agreed to establish a bilateral communication channel for incidents involving artificial intelligence, following a summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington.

The White House announced the agreement in a fact sheet issued after the leaders’ meeting, saying both countries had also established a US-China Super Intelligence Dialogue to discuss the risks and benefits associated with advanced AI systems. 

The next dialogue is expected to take place by November 2026. The discussions are intended to provide a platform for both countries to exchange views on the development and management of increasingly capable AI technologies.

The agreement follows earlier discussions between US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, during which the two sides considered creating an incident notification mechanism for AI-related issues.

Chinese President Xi said AI development should remain under human control, while the two countries continue to compete in advanced technology.

The communication channel is expected to provide a direct means for the countries to address significant AI-related incidents and reduce the risk of misunderstandings as the technology develops.

The agreement represents one area of cooperation between Washington and Beijing amid broader discussions covering trade, technology and other areas of bilateral relations.
