US BOOSTS NIGERIAN AIR FORCE WITH NEW SUPPORT FOR COUNTERTERRORISM OPERATIONS

The United States has strengthened its defence cooperation with Nigeria by providing additional support to the Nigerian Air Force as both countries intensify efforts to tackle terrorism and other security threats. The assistance is expected to improve the capacity of Nigerian military personnel involved in counterterrorism operations, particularly in areas affected by insurgency and other forms of armed violence.

The development was disclosed during a visit by the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, to the Nigerian Air Force headquarters in Abuja, where he met with the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke. Discussions during the visit focused on strengthening military cooperation, improving operational capabilities and exploring further areas of collaboration between the two countries in the fight against terrorism.

The United States has remained one of Nigeria’s key international security partners, providing various forms of assistance, including training, technical support and equipment to strengthen the country’s security forces. The latest engagement is expected to further improve cooperation between the two countries as Nigeria continues to confront threats from terrorist and extremist groups operating in different parts of the country.

The Nigerian Air Force plays a major role in the country’s counterterrorism strategy through aerial surveillance, intelligence gathering and air operations against terrorist targets. Improved cooperation with international partners is expected to enhance these capabilities while supporting the military’s broader efforts to protect communities and restore stability in areas affected by insecurity.

Both countries are expected to continue working together on security matters, with emphasis on building the capacity of Nigerian personnel and improving the effectiveness of counterterrorism operations. The renewed cooperation also reflects ongoing efforts by the Nigerian government to strengthen international partnerships in addressing the country’s security challenges.
