A US-based Nigerian activist, Baba Adam, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to respond decisively to what he described as a reckless and unlawful military threat made by U.S. President Donald Trump.

In an email sent on Sunday, Adam accused Trump of “gunboat diplomacy” and a breach of international law, following the U.S. president’s warning that America could consider military action against Nigeria over alleged attacks on Christians.

“We categorically reject this reckless display of gunboat diplomacy and urge immediate, resolute action to safeguard Nigeria’s sovereignty,” Adam said.

He urged the Nigerian government to summon the U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria and issue a formal protest against what he called foreign interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs.

Adam also advised President Tinubu to consider cutting diplomatic ties with the United States if the threats continue and to take the matter to the United Nations Security Council by filing an urgent resolution defending Nigeria’s sovereignty.

Furthermore, he called for an emergency ECOWAS and African Union summit, saying any attack on Nigeria should be considered an attack on the entire African continent.

“Nigeria must rally Africa to stand together. Any military strike on Nigeria should be seen as an attack on Africa itself,” he stated.

The activist also urged the National Assembly to pass a resolution condemning the alleged threat and reaffirming Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

He advised President Tinubu to test Nigeria’s European alliances, particularly with France, to gauge whether they would support Nigeria in the event of external pressure.

“You may want to activate your relationship with the French leadership — even though they may be weak against the U.S., it’s a good test to see if they are true friends of Nigeria,” Adam noted.

Trump had earlier labeled Nigeria a ‘Country of Particular Concern (CPC)’, citing alleged Christian persecution — a claim that has drawn widespread criticism from both Nigerian officials and commentators who described it as inaccurate and inflammatory.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
