US APPROVES $346M SALE OF BOMBS, MISSILES, AND AMMUNITION TO NIGERIA
The United States has approved a $346 million military sale to Nigeria, which includes a massive supply of bombs, missiles, rockets, and other high-powered ammunition.
According to the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), the deal is designed to boost Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts and help tackle illicit trafficking both within the country and across the Gulf of Guinea.
The package includes:
1,002 MK-82 general-purpose 500 lb bombs
1,002 MXU-650 Air Foil Groups
5,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System II high-explosive warheads
MK66-4 rocket motors
FMU-139 programmable fuzes, bomb parts, impulse cartridges, practice rockets, and integration support
The sale also covers technical, engineering, and logistics assistance from US government personnel and contractors. The main contractors are Lockheed Martin, RTX Missiles and Defense, and BAE Systems.
The DSCA described Nigeria as a strategic partner in Sub-Saharan Africa, adding that the deal would enhance the country’s ability to confront terrorist groups and curb illegal smuggling activities in the region.
This is not the first major arms deal between the two nations. In 2022, the US approved a $997 million package to Nigeria, which included 12 attack helicopters, 2,000 precision weapon guidance systems, and night vision imaging equipment.
