The Chief Medical Director of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the approval and support for a N10 billion Ebola preparedness fund.

The CMD described the intervention as a timely step toward strengthening Nigeria’s health emergency response system and improving readiness for potential outbreaks.

He noted that the funding would enhance surveillance, laboratory capacity, and rapid response mechanisms across key health institutions in the country.

According to him, the COVID-19 pandemic and past Ebola scares highlighted the importance of investing in strong public health infrastructure and preparedness systems.

The hospital chief said the initiative reflects the federal government’s commitment to safeguarding public health and preventing avoidable crises.

Health experts say the fund could improve coordination between federal and state health agencies, particularly in disease detection and containment.

They also emphasized the need for transparent utilization of the funds to ensure maximum impact and accountability in the health sector.

The CMD urged healthcare workers to remain vigilant and continue building capacity for emergency response and infectious disease control.

Stakeholders in the health sector have welcomed the development, describing it as a positive step toward strengthening Nigeria’s epidemic preparedness framework.

The hospital management reaffirmed its commitment to supporting national health security initiatives and improving patient care services.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
