UNIPORT NAMES CONVOCATION ARENA IN HONOUR OF WIKE
The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Rivers State, has named its newly constructed Convocation Arena after the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
The facility was officially inaugurated on Saturday by the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, as part of events marking UNIPORT’s 35th Combined Convocation Ceremony and its 50th Anniversary celebrations.
Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, highlighted the university’s historical journey, noting that its first convocation in 1982 was held in an older venue.
"Today, we are proud to celebrate our 35th convocation and 50 years of existence in this remarkable arena, built by the Rivers State Government under Wike’s leadership," he said.
In his remarks, Ibas praised Wike for his significant contributions to the university’s growth, particularly through infrastructure and education.
"The conception and realization of this arena under Wike's administration stands as a lasting legacy. This modern facility is more than a convocation space—it is a symbol of excellence, a venue for celebrating academic success, fostering policy dialogue, and nurturing future leaders," he stated.
He described the inauguration as symbolic, representing continuity and the transition from a legacy of achievement to a future of promise.
Responding, Minister Wike expressed gratitude for the honour, including the conferment of an Honorary Doctor of Political Science (D.Sc Honoris Causa) by the institution.
He acknowledged UNIPORT’s pivotal role in shaping his personal and professional journey.
"This university gave me a strong foundation—both intellectually and morally. My family and I deeply appreciate this recognition. I have always believed in giving back, which is why I continue to support the university whenever possible," Wike said.
Other awardees of honorary doctorate degrees included First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, and Aminu Masari, Chairman of the TETFund Board of Trustees.
"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."— Editorial Board
