After a nine-year suspension, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has reinstated its Students’ Union Government (SUG), marking a significant step toward renewed student representation.

The development comes alongside the election of new student leaders for the 2025/2026 academic session. UNILAG confirmed the outcome in an official statement published on the university’s website on Friday.

According to the statement, the election was held on campus as part of the transition process toward full restoration of the union. The process produced the Students’ Union President and General Secretary.

The election, coordinated by the Directorate of Student Affairs under the leadership of the Dean, Professor Johnson Agunsoye, took place at the Common Room of Moremi Hall.

The university explained that the new officers were elected from among the current faculty presidents in line with guidelines established for the transitional process.

“At the end of the exercise, Bolaji Akinpelu of the Faculty of Arts emerged as President with a total of nine votes, while Daniel Solomon of the Faculty of Computing and Informatics was elected General Secretary with nine votes,” the statement read.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
