The Head of the Department of Microbiology at the University of Lagos, Prof. Olayide Obidi, has unveiled bio-based coating solutions developed with nanotechnology to help reduce the health and environmental risks associated with lead in paints.

Obidi announced the development during her inaugural lecture, titled “From Micro to Nano: The Colourful Voyage of an Industrial Microbiologist,” held at the Ade Ajayi Auditorium on the university’s campus.

She said her research focused on addressing challenges in Nigeria’s paint industry, particularly the use of harmful substances to improve the durability and shelf life of paint products.

According to her, the research led to the introduction of nanomaterials that can help control microorganisms in paint while providing a safer alternative for coating applications.

Obidi said her team had successfully developed bio-based coating solutions that had been patented and were ready for commercialisation.

She stressed the importance of stronger partnerships between universities and industries, noting that research should move beyond laboratories and be developed into practical solutions that benefit society.

The professor also called for better-equipped laboratories and increased investment in protective nanocoating technology to support further research and encourage wider adoption of innovative solutions.
