UNIJOS HOLDS FAREWELL SESSION FOR LATE WIFE OF SENATOR DIKET PLANG
The University of Jos has held a moving valedictory session in honour of Professor Janet Punyit Plang, the late wife of Senator Diket Satso Plang, who passed away on July 6, 2025, at the Jos University Teaching Hospital.
The solemn ceremony, which took place on Wednesday at the university's auditorium, brought together colleagues, friends, students, and dignitaries to pay their last respects to the late professor, who served as a Professor of Gender Studies and Gerontology.
Vice Chancellor and Chairman of the University Senate, Professor Tanko Ishaya, led the tributes, describing Prof. Plang as a dedicated academic and a vital contributor to the university’s progress. He noted that her legacy of excellence and compassion would not be forgotten.
The Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences delivered her academic citation, recounting her trailblazing achievements, including being the first female Head of Department in her faculty. He said her shoes would be difficult to fill, especially for the many lives she touched both inside and outside the lecture halls.
Other members of the university senate praised her tireless advocacy for student welfare, especially for female students, saying she served not just as a lecturer, but as a mentor and mother figure to many.
In an emotional address, Senator Diket Plang, who represents Plateau Central Senatorial District, thanked the university community for the heartfelt farewell to his wife.
“She stood and managed our family well. Indeed, I found a good wife, and favour came upon me, and all other things were added to me,” he said.
Prof. Janet Plang’s legacy as a scholar, mentor, and advocate for gender equality lives on in the hearts of those she inspired.
