UNIBEN UNVEILS N100BN DEVELOPMENT FUND TO UPGRADE INFRASTRUCTURE, RESEARCH
The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has launched a N100 billion development fund aimed at upgrading infrastructure, enhancing research capabilities, and improving the overall quality of education at the institution.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lilian Salami, announced the initiative on Friday during the university’s 2026 Founders’ Day celebration. The fund will be sourced from alumni contributions, corporate partnerships, government support, and international grants.
Prof. Salami described the fund as a bold step towards transforming UNIBEN into a world-class institution. “This N100 billion development fund will enable us to address critical infrastructure deficits, boost research output, and provide a conducive learning environment for our students,” she stated.
Key projects to be funded include the construction of new lecture halls, renovation of hostels, establishment of a modern research park, and the acquisition of advanced laboratory equipment. The university also plans to expand its digital infrastructure and support faculty development programmes.
The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Chief (Dr.) Victor Omoregie, commended the Vice-Chancellor for the initiative and called on alumni and well-meaning Nigerians to support the vision. “UNIBEN has produced many leaders in various sectors. It is time for us to give back and ensure the university continues to excel,” Omoregie said.
The announcement has been welcomed by students, staff, and alumni, who see it as a significant investment in the future of the institution. The university has set up a committee to oversee the transparent management and utilisation of the fund.
UNIBEN, one of Nigeria’s foremost universities, has been grappling with infrastructure challenges due to inadequate funding. The new development fund is expected to bridge some of these gaps and position the institution for greater global competitiveness.
Stakeholders believe that if successfully implemented, the initiative could serve as a model for other Nigerian universities seeking to improve their facilities and research capabilities through innovative funding mechanisms.
