UN REPORT: 91 CHIBOK SCHOOLGIRLS STILL MISSING AFTER 10 YEARS
A new report by the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) has revealed that at least 91 Chibok schoolgirls remain missing or in captivity, ten years after their abduction by Boko Haram.
The findings, released after a confidential two-week mission to Nigeria in December 2023, highlight what the committee described as “grave and systematic violations” of women’s and girls’ rights.
According to CEDAW, many of the rescued or escaped girls continue to suffer trauma, social stigma, and a lack of proper rehabilitation. The report also noted that Nigeria has failed to protect schoolgirls from repeated mass abductions, with more than 1,400 students kidnapped since the 2014 Chibok incident.
The committee urged the Nigerian government to intensify efforts to rescue the remaining girls, adequately support survivors, and strengthen security in schools across the country.
The report concluded that the abductions are part of a wider pattern of violence against women and girls in northern Nigeria.
