The United Kingdom has invited Nigerian innovators and startups to apply for a major digital and AI-focused challenge, offering a total funding pool of €827,000 to support breakthrough solutions in the energy sector.

The initiative, known as the Digital Energy Challenge, is backed by the UK government in partnership with the European Union. It targets startups and small businesses across Africa, including Nigeria, that are developing digital and AI-driven technologies to improve energy access and efficiency.

At its core, the programme is designed to tackle one of Nigeria’s biggest challenges reliable electricity. With millions still lacking consistent power, the challenge encourages innovators to build solutions that can improve electricity distribution, enhance grid performance, and support the transition to cleaner energy systems.

Applicants can participate through two main tracks. The “Tech Accelerator” category supports innovative digital projects across multiple African countries, while the “Partnership” track focuses specifically on Nigeria, with collaboration opportunities tied to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company.

Funding is a major highlight. Selected projects can receive up to €150,000 under the accelerator track, while partnership projects may secure as much as €400,000. Beyond funding, participants will also gain access to expert support, bootcamps, and networking opportunities to help scale their ideas.

To qualify, applicants must be small or medium-sized enterprises with strong research and development components. Projects must also be beyond the idea stage and ready for real-world implementation within a year.

Applications opened in April and will close on June 17, 2026, giving innovators a limited window to submit their proposals.

This challenge represents more than just funding it’s a chance for Nigerian innovators to test their ideas at scale, gain international visibility, and contribute to solving real energy problems. As global interest in Africa’s tech ecosystem grows, opportunities like this are positioning local talent at the forefront of innovation.
