UI EMERGES BEST NIGERIAN UNIVERSITY IN LAW, MEDICINE
The University of Ibadan has emerged as the best Nigerian university in both law and medicine, according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2026.
The rankings were obtained from the Times Higher Education website on Saturday.
In the law category, the University of Ibadan and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, were ranked in the 301–400 band, placing Nigeria among the world’s top 425 law schools.
The assessment covered teaching, research, international outlook, and performance across key areas, including constitutional and administrative law, criminal law, commercial and corporate law, international law, and legal theory.
According to THE, “The Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2026 reveal the world’s top universities for law.
“The 2026 Law ranking evaluates excellence across constitutional and administrative law; international law; commercial and corporate law; criminal law and justice; and legal theory and jurisprudence, among other topics.”
Globally, Stanford University emerged as the top institution for law, based largely on teaching excellence.
In the medicine and health category, THE said the rankings assessed universities across medicine, dentistry, nursing, and other healthcare disciplines.
“The 2026 Medical and Health ranking evaluates universities across medicine, dentistry, nursing, and other healthcare disciplines.
“Oxford takes the top spot for its outstanding performance in teaching, research, and industry links. The University of California, Berkeley, also joins the top 10.
“This year, we evaluated 1,230 universities from 102 countries and territories, using the same 18 trusted and rigorous performance indicators as the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, recalibrated to suit medical and health fields,” THE stated.
In Nigeria, the University of Ibadan led the medical and health rankings in the 301–400 band, followed by the University of Lagos in the 401–500 band.
Ahmadu Bello University, Bayero University, University of Benin, University of Jos and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka were ranked in the 601–800 band.
Babcock University, Obafemi Awolowo University, and the University of Ilorin featured in the 801–1000 category, while other institutions, including Lagos State University and the University of Port Harcourt, appeared in the 1001+ band.
