UEL: JUVENTUS DENIED AT THE DEATH, SUNDERLAND MAKE POINT IN POLAND
Juventus were denied a late winner in a 2–2 draw with Rennes, while Sunderland earned a point away to Lech Poznań in the Europa League on Thursday.
The results kept both clubs unbeaten after three league-phase matches, with seven points apiece.
Late frustration for Juventus
Juventus thought they had secured victory when Jhon Lucumí found the net in the closing minutes, but the goal was ruled out following an offside review.
The decision left the Italian side sharing the points after a match in which both teams had held the lead.
Juventus had to recover from a 2–1 half-time deficit before drawing level in the second half. Their search for a winner continued late into the game, but Lucumí’s disallowed effort ensured Rennes left Turin with a point.
The result ended Juventus’s winning start to the competition while preserving their unbeaten record.
Sunderland take a point in Poland
Sunderland also maintained their unbeaten run, drawing 1–1 with Lech Poznań.
The English side led at the interval, but the hosts equalised after the break to secure a share of the points.
Although Sunderland could not turn their advantage into a third consecutive European victory, the away draw added another point to their league-phase total.
For Juventus, the night brought frustration over a winner that did not stand. For Sunderland, it delivered a useful point on the road as their European campaign continued.
