UEFA PUNISHES GREENWOOD AND GUENDOUZI AFTER FENERBAHCE-LYON CLASH

UEFA has sanctioned Fenerbahce players Mason Greenwood and Matteo Guendouzi following the confrontation that erupted after their Champions League play-off victory over Lyon in France. The governing body imposed both suspensions and financial penalties on the two players for their involvement in the disorderly scenes surrounding the fixture.

Fenerbahce secured a 2-1 victory in the second leg at Lyon, completing a 3-2 aggregate win to book their place in the Champions League league phase. However, celebrations after the final whistle quickly descended into a confrontation involving players and members of both teams' coaching staffs. Greenwood and Guendouzi, who had both previously represented Lyon's local rivals Marseille, were among those caught up in the incident.

Guendouzi received the heavier punishment after UEFA's disciplinary body ruled that he had insulted individuals at the match, provoked spectators and breached the organisation's basic conduct regulations. The France international was handed a four-match suspension in UEFA club competitions and fined €50,000. However, two of the four matches have been suspended for a one-year probationary period, meaning the immediate ban covers two matches unless further disciplinary issues occur during the probation period.

Greenwood was also punished by UEFA for his conduct during the aftermath of the match. The Fenerbahce forward was given a one-match suspension and fined €30,000, with the suspension similarly placed under a one-year probationary period. As a result, he will only serve the ban if the conditions attached to the disciplinary decision require it during that period.

The disciplinary action was not limited to the two Fenerbahce players. UEFA also sanctioned both clubs over incidents surrounding the match, including crowd disturbances, the use of pyrotechnics and the throwing of objects. Lyon goalkeeper coach Antonio Ferreira received a particularly severe punishment, with UEFA handing him a five-match suspension, two of which were suspended.

The incident followed a highly charged contest in which Fenerbahce overturned Lyon's advantage to win the second leg and advance to the next stage of Europe's premier club competition. Tensions spilled over after the final whistle, with the post-match confrontation involving several players and members of staff.

Guendouzi had previously defended his behaviour, pointing to verbal abuse from sections of the Lyon support. Nevertheless, UEFA's disciplinary ruling focused on his conduct during the incident and determined that his actions breached its regulations.

Fenerbahce has indicated that it intends to appeal the sanctions imposed on its players. The Turkish club is particularly challenging the punishments handed to Guendouzi and Greenwood as it prepares for its Champions League campaign.

The sanctions mean Fenerbahce will begin its Champions League league-phase campaign under the shadow of the Lyon controversy, with Guendouzi facing the possibility of missing European fixtures because of the disciplinary decision. The club will now look to put the incident behind it as attention turns towards its European campaign.
