Former Club Brugge star Franky Van der Elst has cautioned the Belgian side about Atletico Madrid’s attacking threat, particularly after the addition of Ademola Lookman.

The warning comes ahead of Wednesday night’s Champions League clash at Jan Breydel Stadium.

Van der Elst noted that Atletico strengthened their squad in January with the signing of Lookman, who was previously named African Footballer of the Year. Despite not yet scoring in La Liga, Lookman has impressed Atletico fans with his performances in the Copa del Rey.

In his debut match against Real Betis, Lookman scored and assisted a goal, a feat he repeated as Atletico defeated FC Barcelona in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semifinals.

Tonight, Lookman will look to continue his strong form in cup competitions, facing a familiar opponent in Raphael Onyedika, who plays a pivotal role in Club Brugge’s midfield.

Van der Elst, who played 619 matches for Brugge and scored 21 goals during his career, stressed the impact Lookman has already made at Atletico Madrid.

“Don’t forget that Ademola Lookman has joined,” Van der Elst said in Het Nieuwsblad, via Voetbalkrant. “He made an immediate impact. Against Barcelona, Atletico deployed Lookman, Alvarez, and Griezmann up front, with Llorente in the middle.”

Lookman is also familiar with Club Brugge, having featured for Atalanta when they defeated the Belgian side on Matchday 2 of last season’s group stage. Previously, Club Brugge had secured a win over Atalanta at the same stage.
