Former England and Liverpool goalkeeper, David James, has backed Chelsea’s number one, Robert Sanchez, to play a key role in helping the Blues challenge for major honours this season.

Sanchez, 27, faced heavy criticism last season after a string of errors, but still managed to win the Golden Glove at the FIFA Club World Cup. Many Chelsea fans and pundits expected the club to sign a new goalkeeper in the summer, but Sanchez has retained his starting spot.

So far, the Spaniard has impressed in the new Premier League season, keeping two clean sheets in the opening four games and producing vital saves in the 2-2 draw with Brentford, where he denied Kevin Schade and Dango Ouattara.

Speaking to Metro via Esports Bets, James admitted he was initially surprised Chelsea didn’t replace Sanchez but praised the goalkeeper’s progress.

“I don’t think they were looking for a Sanchez replacement based on what he did at the Club World Cup. I’ve seen an improvement in what he does,” James said.

The ex-England shot-stopper described Sanchez as a “monster,” insisting he has what it takes to help Chelsea fight for silverware again.

“I think he’s a monster, he could be a monster. He’ll give them the opportunity to challenge for titles again,” James added.

Sanchez is expected to start on Wednesday night when Chelsea kick off their 2025/26 UEFA Champions League campaign against Bayern Munich.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
