United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has intensified efforts to promote employee wellness and sustainability practices across its operations in over 20 African countries, reinforcing its commitment to responsible banking and human capital development.

The bank recently launched a comprehensive wellness programme that includes mental health support, fitness initiatives, nutritional guidance, and work-life balance policies for its over 20,000 employees continent-wide. UBA Group Managing Director/CEO, Oliver Alawuba, described the initiative as central to building a resilient and motivated workforce.

“We believe that healthy, fulfilled employees are the foundation of sustainable business success. Our wellness drive is not just about physical health but also mental and emotional well-being,” Alawuba said during the programme’s regional rollout.

In parallel, UBA is advancing its environmental sustainability agenda through green banking products, energy-efficient branch designs, and community tree-planting projects. The bank has also integrated ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles into its lending decisions and internal operations.

Employees across UBA’s African subsidiaries have welcomed the initiatives, noting improved access to healthcare services, flexible working arrangements, and training on sustainable practices.

The dual focus on wellness and sustainability aligns with UBA’s broader vision of creating long-term value for stakeholders while contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The bank plans to expand these programmes further in the coming year.
