TWO POLICEMEN KILLED IN FRESH ATTACK ON DPO’S CONVOY IN BENUE
Suspected armed herders have attacked the entourage of the Divisional Police Officer in Ayilamo, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State, killing two police officers. The incident occurred on Monday evening as the DPO was returning to the community from Makurdi, where he had gone to collect some items.
The attack happened only a few days after Ayilamo was hit by another deadly assault in which four policemen and seven residents were reportedly killed. The latest incident has further heightened concerns over the security situation in the community and surrounding areas.
The spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, DSP Peter Aondongu, confirmed the latest attack. According to him, the DPO had travelled to Makurdi and was on his way back to Ayilamo when the armed attackers ambushed his team.
Aondongu said two officers serving in the DPO’s entourage were killed during the attack. The circumstances surrounding the attack, including the identities of the attackers and whether any arrests have been made, were not immediately disclosed.
The latest incident adds to a series of violent attacks reported in parts of Benue State, particularly in communities affected by recurring clashes and insecurity. Security agencies are expected to continue investigations into the attack and efforts to identify those responsible.
