TWO NIGERIAN GIRLS DEFEAT JAPAN, CANADA, SPAIN TO WIN GLOBAL TECH GRAND PRIZE
Nigeria’s tech ecosystem is celebrating a major global victory after two young girls from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, stunned the world with their groundbreaking innovation.
Akachukwu Blessed Nwachukwu (10) and Ifunanya Gabriella Okoye (10) emerged winners of the 2025 Technovation Global Summit (Beginner Division) with their AI-powered app Stay Woke — designed to fight drowsy and distracted driving.
The mobile app, developed under their team name Appsolute, uses facial recognition and voice interaction to monitor drivers in real time, detect fatigue, and issue timely alerts to prevent accidents.
Against fierce competition from Japan, Spain, Canada, and Peru, the Nigerian duo outshone all contenders to clinch the world title at the global finale.
Technovation, the world’s largest tech entrepreneurship program for girls aged 8–18, recorded over 33,000 participants from 117 countries this year, with more than 11,000 completing the program and 3,200 tech-based solutions developed.
Their mentor, Somkenechukwu Mamah, founder of Code Ambassadors Academy, hailed the win as a turning point for African innovation.
“This victory proves that innovation knows no age or boundary. Akachukwu and Ifunanya have shown resilience, creativity, and courage, demonstrating that young people in Nigeria and across Africa can compete and win on the global stage,” he said.
The duo, who were trained through Code Ambassadors Academy — a STEM-accredited platform that has equipped over 7,000 Nigerian children with skills in coding, robotics, AI, and design — credited their win to their mentor’s guidance and the support of their families.
For Team Appsolute, this triumph goes beyond Nigeria. It’s a bold statement that girls everywhere can dream big, build solutions, and change the world through technology.
