A tragic road accident occurred on Monday night along the Owode-Ijako axis of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to nine others.

According to a traffic report from the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), the crash involved three vehicles: a DAF truck, a Mazda bus, and a tricycle (Keke NAPEP). The incident was confirmed on Tuesday by TRACE and obtained by PUNCH Metro.

The report stated that the DAF truck had been parked at the sloped entrance of a warehouse in the area, with its engine still running. The driver had reportedly exited the vehicle to submit a waybill to security personnel at the warehouse gate. While unattended, the truck apparently rolled backward into the expressway and collided with the bus and tricycle.

The report detailed: “A fatal road accident occurred at the Tipper Garage area, inbound Abeokuta on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. Vehicles involved include a red DAF truck (JJJ-144XD), a white Mazda bus (EPE-394XP), and a yellow Keke NAPEP (DGB-599VC).”

An eyewitness stated that although the truck’s handbrake was engaged, it eventually failed, causing the vehicle to reverse downhill and crash into the other vehicles.

A total of 14 people were reportedly involved in the crash—11 males and three females. Nine victims (seven males and two females) sustained varying degrees of injuries. One male was confirmed dead at the scene, while another male later died at the hospital, bringing the death toll to two.

All injured victims were transported to Ifo General Hospital for treatment. The report noted that officials from the police and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) assisted in the rescue and confirmed the second fatality at the hospital.
