TWELVE MIGRANTS DIE IN SEPARATE SEA CROSSINGS OFF GREEK ISLANDS FOLLOWING BOAT COLLISIONS AND CAPSIZING
Greek coast guard confirms fatalities off Lesbos and Samos as emergency search and rescue operations pull dozens of survivors from the Aegean Sea
At least 12 migrants, including an infant and four women, lost their lives in two separate maritime incidents while attempting to cross the Aegean Sea from Turkey to Greece.
The Greek Coast Guard reported that six of the casualties, a baby, four women, and another individual, died off the island of Lesbos after a high-speed vessel transporting migrants collided with the port side of a police patrol boat during a sea interception.
Emergency response teams managed to pull eight survivors from the water following the collision off Lesbos, while investigators commenced an immediate inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the impact.
In a separate incident near the island of Samos, six other migrants, five men and one woman, drowned when a small vessel capsized in rough sea conditions.
Coast guard personnel rescued 14 individuals from the Samos shipwreck, including a presumed Iranian national suspected of organizing the illegal transit across the maritime border.
The Aegean Sea remains a high-risk transit corridor for migrants fleeing conflict and economic distress across Asia and the Middle East in attempts to reach European Union territory via Greek border points.
