TURKISH GOVT PLEDGES DEEPER TIES WITH NIGERIA AS ENVOY MARKS 103RD REPUBLIC
The Turkish government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening diplomatic, economic and cultural relations with Nigeria as the country marked the 103rd anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of Türkiye.
The Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mehmet Poroy, gave the assurance during a reception in Abuja to commemorate the national anniversary, highlighting the longstanding relationship between both countries and the opportunities for deeper cooperation.
Poroy described Nigeria as an important strategic partner in Africa, noting that Türkiye was interested in expanding collaboration in trade, investment, education, defence, technology and infrastructure development.
He also emphasised the importance of strengthening people-to-people relationships through cultural exchanges, educational partnerships and increased business engagement.
The ambassador noted that both countries had maintained diplomatic relations for several decades, with their cooperation continuing to expand across different sectors.
Nigeria and Türkiye have increasingly explored opportunities to boost bilateral trade and investment, particularly in manufacturing, construction, agriculture, energy and defence.
The Turkish government also expressed interest in supporting initiatives that could create employment, encourage technology transfer and promote sustainable economic development in Nigeria.
The anniversary celebration provided an opportunity for diplomats, government officials, business leaders and other stakeholders to reflect on Türkiye's national journey and the prospects for stronger international partnerships.
Türkiye, formerly known internationally as Turkey, became a republic on October 29, 1923, following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the establishment of a new political system under Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
The latest diplomatic commitment underscores both countries' interest in expanding their relationship and exploring new opportunities for mutual economic and strategic benefits.
