TRUMP SPARKS CONTROVERSY WITH SUGGESTION TO RENAME NEW MEXICO ‘NEW AMERICA

US President Donald Trump has stirred controversy after suggesting that the state of New Mexico should be renamed “New America.” Trump made the proposal in a post on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, sharing an altered map of the southwestern state in which the word “Mexico” was crossed out and replaced with “America.” The White House later amplified the post by sharing the image on its official X account, although neither the president nor the administration announced any formal process to change the state’s name.

Trump said he had received suggestions that New Mexico should adopt the proposed name, describing “New America” as a more prestigious and beautiful title for the state. The move immediately drew criticism from New Mexico officials, with Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham firmly rejecting the idea. Grisham said the state’s name was not open for debate and pointed to its long history and cultural identity, while accusing the president of diverting attention from more pressing concerns facing residents.

The proposal follows a series of controversial naming initiatives associated with Trump since he returned to the White House. Earlier, his administration moved to use “Gulf of America” instead of Gulf of Mexico in US federal usage, while Trump has also backed the renaming of Lake Ontario as “Lake America.” The latest proposal has therefore been viewed as another example of the president’s effort to place more explicitly American names on prominent geographic features and locations.

However, changing the name of a US state is considerably different from renaming a geographic feature through federal action. The president does not have the unilateral authority to change a state’s official name by executive order, meaning any genuine attempt to rename New Mexico would require a formal constitutional and political process. There has also been no indication that such a process has been initiated, leaving Trump’s post as a proposal rather than an official name change.

The suggestion has already prompted strong reactions from New Mexico politicians, who have defended the state’s existing name and its historical significance. Several Democratic lawmakers rejected the idea, arguing that “New Mexico” represents generations of history, culture and family identity. For now, the state remains officially known as New Mexico, while Trump’s latest naming proposal adds another chapter to the ongoing political debate over his administration’s approach to American identity and geographic names.
