Ghana has demanded a thorough investigation into the killing of 15-year-old Javits Frimpong in New York, while the city’s mayor says President Donald Trump has agreed to help his mother travel from Ghana.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced on Saturday that Trump had agreed during a telephone conversation to facilitate a visa for Doris Gyamfi, who lives in Kumasi.

The White House had not independently confirmed the arrangement, and it remained unclear whether the visa had been issued.

Frimpong was reportedly walking to school in the Bronx when he was shot. Police took him to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators were searching for three suspected teenage assailants. No arrests or motive had been announced at the time of the report.

The teenager moved from Ghana in October 2025 to join his father, Thomas Frimpong, and continue his education.

His father described him as a bright child who hoped to become a doctor. He also said his son had complained about bullying at school, although police had not established any connection between those complaints and the shooting.

Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, conveyed condolences from President John Dramani Mahama and pledged legal and consular support.

“We will pursue justice, and we will make sure that those who did this do not get away with it,” Ablakwa said.

He added that Ghana would fund the mother’s journey, assist with visa arrangements and contribute towards funeral expenses.

Community members gathered for vigils on Saturday, while education officials offered counselling to the teenager’s school community.
