As Ukraine marked its 34th Independence Day on Sunday, August 24, global leaders sent messages of solidarity to the war-torn nation. Among them was US President Donald Trump, who praised Ukraine’s resilience in a heartfelt letter shared by President Volodymyr Zelensky.

In his message, Trump commended the determination of the Ukrainian people and reaffirmed America’s support:

“The people of Ukraine have an unbreakable spirit, and your country’s courage inspires many. As you mark this important day, know the United States respects your fight, honors your sacrifices, and believes in your future as an independent nation.”

Trump also stressed the urgent need to end the “senseless killing”, calling for a negotiated peace that would both secure Ukraine’s sovereignty and bring lasting stability.

President Zelensky responded with a defiant message to Ukrainians, insisting that while the war continues, Kyiv’s future remains in its own hands:

“Ukraine has not yet fully won, but it will certainly not lose. Ukraine is stronger, has self-respect, and will never again be forced into compromises that bring shame. Our future will be decided by us alone.”

The Independence Day celebrations drew attention from around the world. Chinese President Xi Jinping, Britain’s King Charles, Pope Leo XIV, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also sent messages of support. Carney, making his first official visit to Kyiv, pledged Canada’s “unwavering” commitment to Ukraine.

Meanwhile, the conflict showed no signs of easing. Russia claimed that a Ukrainian drone strike caused a fire near the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant, though officials said radiation levels remained stable. Ukrainian authorities have yet to respond to the claim.

As Ukraine enters another year of war, the show of international backing on its Independence Day highlights both the country’s enduring fight for sovereignty and the world’s watchful eye on its struggle.
